DIY Design Guidelines

Please read and follow these guidelines carefully to get the best possible print out for your A4 Brochures. Failure to do so will mean delay and disappointment with the final products.

Size and Bleed

Size is an actual size of your A4 Brochures, while bleed is the extra safe amount of space you should add to the design. When the A4 Brochures are cut, there are margin for errors. So by leaving extra spaces, not only will your artwork be safe, you will get the best possible print out.

Resolution

All images when printed must have a minimum resolution of 300dpi (dots per inch). Images that have a lower resolution may print pixelated or fuzzy.

Images taken from the internet often have a resolution of only 72dpi and will very rarely print very well.

Colours - RGB Versus CMYK

Your web designer keeps asking for things in RGB and your printer needs them in CMYK. You've always wondered what the difference is and now its time to dig in and find out!

RGB is the normal color scheme used in computer graphics, while CMYK is the standard for printing color images. Because the computer screen displays light, the more colors that are added, the more light is added, thus the lighter your resulting color. Because the CMYK color scheme is used in combining inks, the more colors you combine, the darker your resulting color.

Some RGB colours that appear on your screen can not be printed in CMYK. You must be careful when selecting colours on your business card, as some colours will print “dull” when compared to your computer screen.

In the diagram below, the colours on top are RGB colours as you seen on your computer screen. When printed in CMYK, they would appear as the colours on the bottom, slightly duller.

Programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator can convert all colours to CMYK. Programs such as Microsoft Word can not, so you must manually select colours which are not at risk.

Fonts

Fonts in your artwork need to be “converted to outlines” or “flattened” into a graphic. This will eliminate the chance of fonts not displaying correctly and not printing the way you intended.

If you are using a program such as Microsoft Word, Powerpoint or Publisher, it is recommended that you use our online templates as the file is already set with the correct options.
